Nicole and I watched Byzantium (2012), which was great. A thrilling, atmospheric, moody, relationship-driven vampire drama. Strong vibes of Let the Right One In (2008), though not quite as good as its brilliant predecessor. Interesting dynamics due to the more limited interpretation of vampire powers, and a cool mythos. Another wonderful film from Neil Jordan, creator of Interview with the Vampire (1994) and The Company of Wolves (1984).
Annihilation (2018) was awesome!! Absolutely gorgeous, and very interesting. And while I normally find CGI offensive, the effects were very tasteful. Not horror tho, straight up sci-fi thriller. Good stuff.
A visceral, dizzying, and visually powerful Korean ghost/demon possession story. 👍👍 A great start to the season!
WOWWWW Santa Sangre (1989) is one the best movies I've ever seen, across genres. Such richness and depth of emotion! So very strange and haunting!! Brilliant. I knew I loved Dario Argento (Suspiria is my all-time favorite horror movie), but now I am pretty damn impressed by Claudio Argento, too! What a talented family.
Cronos (1993) was soooo good!! Really inventive and visually arresting. Another gem from Guillermo del Toro, with Ron Perlman convincingly portraying a brutal thug. Surprising moments of comedy and poignant emotion, too. Fabulous!
Wow, Polanski's 1965 Repulsion is POWERFUL!! Definitely one of the strongest films on this list. Dan pointed out something that I did not know, namely that Polanski himself is a sexual predator, which quite possibly informs this movie's gripping portrayal of one woman's (well-founded) androphobia. Yuck!!
The House of the Devil, horror movie 4 of this season, was AMAZING!!! so suspenseful and really artistic filmography... Plus, 1980z...
